Have you dreamed about what the music would sound like if sea was somehow magically playing an instrument. Well, if you want to stop dreaming about, you have to come to city of Zadar and hear sea playing sea organs. Due to its 3.000 year old history and rich cultural heritage Zadar is considered as the "open-air museum."
Hear organs during the night & day:
Sea waves push air through the whistle pipes
Sea organs are located on the beautiful seaside promenade in the center of Zadar. Zadar sea organs are the first musical pipe organs in the world that are played by the sea. When you walk on the promenade you can barely notice them because they are built into these elegant steps (that are carved out of white stone) leading towards the sea. There are total of 36 musically tuned tubes with whistle openings on the sidewalk. When the sea makes movement, it pushes the air towards the tubes which then produce various sounds, depending on size and speed of the wave. Waves hitting the quay create amazing harmonic sounds!
Alfred Hitchock: Zadar has the most beautiful sunset in the world
This architectual and acoustics masterpiece has been designed by Croatian stone carving experts and architect Nikola Basic. When you visit Zadar you have to visit the seaside promenade, just sit down, relax and overlook islands in distance while listening to this "sea-orchestra". When Alfred Hitchock visited Zadar he said the most beautiful place in the world to watch sunset is exactly where sea organs are located today. I wander what he would say today when beautiful view of the nearby islands and the sunset is complemented by the music of the sea?
For all of you wanting to visit Zadar, I suggest looking into hotels or private accommodation through local tourist agencies.
Stay tuned!
