Opatija = Abbey
Opatija is located in the north Adriatic sea (region called Kvarner) and was named after the small Benedictine abbey that was build in the beginning of 12th century and is located right next to the seaside promenade. Opatija in Croatian means abbey. At the end of 19th century Austrian Yacht club organized first regatta in Opatija. News about this heavenly town on the Adriatic coast spread throughout Europe very quickly and very soon it became one of the top resorts for European nobility and aristocracy. In 1889 Opatija was proclaimed a health resort.

Resort reserved for European aristocracy 
When you come to Opatija you have a feeling like you are in Nice, but I would say that it is even prettier than Nice. Opatija really has that old-money feel. Everywhere you go you are surrounded by these astonishing villas and hotels of exceptional architectural value surrounded by rich lush Mediterranean vegetation. Opatija has also a very unique climate which was recognized by Austro-Hungarian aristocracy who build numerous mansions and villas along the Opatija riviera as their winter homes.

Before 2000's Opatija used to be THE place for great nightlife packed with numerous disco clubs and seaside bars. After 2000 most of the nightlife scene moved to nearby city Rijeka so today Opatija is a perfect place for a relaxing holiday. Opatija has a rich cultural and entertainment events throughout the year and is a home to some of the best restaurants on the Adriatic coast.

Gastronomic delicacies 
When you visit Opatija you have to explore its great gastronomic offering. There are numerous restaurant with beautiful terraces overlooking the Adriatic serving unique culinary delicacies like big tasty Kvarner shrimps in black tempura on caulliflower cream with sorbetto, black and white truffles, and wild asparaguses among many others.
